GUIDELINES FOR THE PREPARATION OF ARTICLES
Scientific and technological research articles
Title: It should not exceed 25 words and should be centered and bolded. The title of articles written in Spanish or Portuguese should have the English translation before the abstract. Upper case lettering should only be used for the first letter of the title and the initial of a proper name. Only scientific names should be written in cursive and in parenthesis and the first letter of the genus must be capitalized, while the species name is not capitalized (for example: Comparison of serological tests for Canine Visceral Leishmaniasis (Leishmania chagasi) in serums proceeding of endemic Colombian regions1). The entity that financed the research should always constitute de first footnote (for example: 1Financed by the Research and Graduate Vice rector’s Office at Universidad de Caldas.)
Authors. The complete names should be listed, followed by an upper italics number for each author. The first and last names of each should be separated by a comma, centered and the first letter capitalized (for example: Johan Paul Blake2, Alexandre Agostinho Mexia3). In case the authors have 2 last names, these should be united by a hyphen (for example: Jorge Mario Cruz-Amaya2). After this, centered, in italics and in Times New Roman font 9, beginning with the upper number of each author, the department and institution they belong to should be mentioned (2Department of Animal Health, Universidad de Caldas, Manizales, Colombia and Monogastric animals nutrition Program, Universidad del Tolima, A.A. 2580. Ibagué, Colombia). The e- mail address of the main author only, should be written centered under this text.
Abstract in Spanish. Should start with the word RESUMEN at 1.0 cm from the left margin, in upper case and bold letters. This information will clearly state the main objective of the research followed by a concise description of the materials and methods, relevant results and conclusions, up to 1800 characters, including spaces. Information or aspects not mentioned in the research should not be included, nor abbreviations or bibliographical citations. It should be written in third person, in one paragraph spaced1.5.
Abstract. It must appear on the second page, written in scientific English, faithfully reflecting the content of the abstract. Avoid using commercial translation applications available on the Internet or computer programs. The text should be justified, consisting of one paragraph, 1.5 spaced, beginning with the word ABSTRACT, at 1,0 cm from the left margin in capitalized bold letters.
Spanish and English key words. Each of these subtitles must be bold, followed by a colon, and it should include a list of four to six key words in Spanish and English, immediately after the abstract, respectively, in alphabetical order, lower case, aligned and separated by commas. They should not end in a period, and they must give a general idea of the subject permitting their easy identification in scientific information databases. They should not be part of the article title, and preferably, they should be those accepted by international databases, which can be consulted in the following web pages: http://decs.bvs.br/E/homepage.htm and http://www.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/
Introduction. Must begin on the first line of the third page of the article, with the first letter capitalized, aligned to the left and in bold. At the most, it must contain 5,500 characters with spaces. The antecedents that support the objective of the article must be presented without being extensive, using only pertinent references and avoiding the use of different citations on the same subject. It is necessary to indicate the hypothesis postulated and the research objectives.
Materials and Methods. This subtitle must be aligned to the left, with the first letter of each word capitalized and in bold. The description must be clear and with an original specific reference for each biological, analytical and statistical procedure. All modifications must be explained. When necessary, include an explanation on the steps followed in the study, with the purpose of guaranteeing the fulfillment of the principles and ethical norms of the Declaration of Helsinki of 1975 and its later revisions, as well as those of Resolution 8430 of 1993 of the Colombian Ministry of Health.
Results and Discussion. This subtitle must be aligned to the left, with the initial letter of each word capitalized, and in bold. The results combined with the discussion in a logical concise form must be described in past tense. Charts and figures must be limited to the strictly necessary and should provide sufficient data and with some variation range to help the reader in the understanding of the results of the experiment. The discussion must interpret the results these and additionally integrate literature results with those of the research in order to provide the reader with an ample base with which the hypotheses raised can be accepted or rejected. It is necessary to include at the end of this part, an analysis of the implications of the findings, their limitations and their projections in future research.
Conclusions. Must be written in one paragraph and at the most contain 1,000 characters, including the spaces. They should not repeat the results, and must clearly explain, without abbreviations, acronyms or citations, what the research results conclude for science animal.
Acknowledgements: Can be written after the conclusions and they should not exceed 3 lines.
Charts. Must be mentioned in the text, identified and enumerated consecutively with Arabic numbers. The heading must be concise and descriptive and must be placed above the charts. The abbreviations or symbols must be explained at the foot of the chart. The charts must be saved as part of the text and be separated on different pages after the bibliographical references. They must be self-explanatory and must not repeat what was mentioned in the text. It is essential that they are created with the Word menu “Insert Chart”, with different cells (charts with values separated by the ENTER key or as figures will not be accepted). Horizontal lines of ¾ in thickness should only be used, and the statistical measures of variation should be identified, such as the standard deviation, the standard error of the mean the variation coefficient.
Figures. Include graphs and photographs which must be mentioned appropriately in the text. They must be identified and enumerated consecutively, using Arabic numbers. The title of the figure must be concise and descriptive and it should be placed below the figure with the initial letter capitalized.
It is important to make sure that each graph or figure is mentioned in the text. If figures, published or unpublished data originating from another source were used, they must contain the original source, and it must be referenced.
The units, letters, numbers and symbols must be clear and uniform in all the illustrations and of a size big enough for their legibility, even after the necessary reduction made for their publication. The titles and detailed explanations must be included on the feet or epigraphs, and not in the illustrations themselves. When necessary, the lines used in the figures must have a minimum thickness equivalent to ¾.
The points of the curves in statistical graphs should be represented with contrasting markers such as circles, squares, triangles or rhombuses (filled or empty). Additionally, the curves should be clearly identified, so that the excess of information does not jeopardize the understanding of the graph.
In the case of bar graphs, different filling effects must be used (dotted or horizontal, vertical, diagonal lines, etc.). The gray colors should be avoided since they hinder the visualization of the printed form, and bold letters should not be used in the figures.
In the cases of microphotographs, the magnification and inking method used must be indicated. The symbols, arrows or letters used in these should clearly contrast with the background.
In order to send the figures in digital form, they should be scanned in a resolution of minimum 300 dpi, or whenever possible, digitized by means of a camera. In that case, they should not exceed 1.8 Mb (1800 kb). Both kinds of figures must be sent as a JPG file (try not to use effects that can distort the quality of the image or distort their reading of reality). Figures must be sent along with the original article in a folder denominated ‘Images’, as well as a text file (.doc, .txt) informing the order and the location in the body of the text, and the numeration or footnote explanation that corresponds to each image.
The color figures are normally printed in black and white, with the author’s approval. The use of color figures implies that the color of the reproduction will be paid by the author.
Units, symbols and abbreviations. The units of measurement should be mentioned using the metric decimal system, leaving a space between the number and the unit. The units should not be written in plural or with a final period, but with a comma (for example: 20 kg, it should be lower case, 20Kg is incorrect). For the volume units and subunits, the liter must be simplified by the capital letter L and milliliter by ml, in agreement with international standards (for example: 10 L and 35 ml and not 10 l and 35 mL). The temperature units must be written without a space between the number and the unit (for example: 21°C and not 21 °C). The symbols used for time units will be min for minute, h for hour and d for day; the units should be written with a space between the number and the unit, (for example: 60 s).
The percentage and currency symbols should be linked to the number, that is to say without spaces (for example: 15%, and not 15 %). The numbers with decimals in Spanish and Portuguese must be separated with commas and not with periods (for example: 847,15 and 3.250,48 and not 847.15 or 3,250.48), whereas the English articles must separate the values with a period (for example: 596.84 and 7,254.13 and not 596,84 or 7.254,13). To describe the probability of statistical tests, the upper case P should be placed in parenthesis, followed by the symbol and the number, without spaces in between them (for example: (P<0,05) and not (P < 0,05)). Between the mean, the symbol and the standard deviation spaces should not be used, nor after the symbol (for example: 654,16±38,24 and not 654,16 ± 38,24). To express the correlation, a space should be left before and after it (for example: r2 = 0,91 and not r2=0,91). The use of asterisks in the charts to represent the probability P should correspond to: *P<0,05; **P<0,01; ***P<0,001.
All of the names originating from another language must be referenced in the same manner, accompanied by their international abbreviation in parenthesis, for example: Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH); afterwards and for later references, only the abbreviation should be cited. In order to reference compounds, reagents, medicines and equipment used their names as well as their producing house and host city must be included in parenthesis, for example: (Biotech Australia PYY.Ltd., Rosevile, Australia). Commercial names should not be included in the text, and reference should always be made to the active principle. In case of being strictly necessary, the commercial name can be cited as a footnote. The use of non-standardized abbreviations and acronyms should be avoided, for example: “T1 was greater than T4, which did not differ from T3”.
Bibliographical citations in the text. The bibliographical sources in the body of the text must be mentioned using the author’s last name in lower case, followed by the publication year, as shown in the following examples: (Linares, 2007) or Linares (2007). When there are two authors & must be used, for example: Silva & Sanchez (2006) or (Silva & Sanchez, 2006); in the case of three or more authors the last name of the first author followed by et al. and the publication year must be included, for example: (Hashimoto et al., 2007) or Hashimoto et al. (2007). If the same author has published more than one work in the same year, each article must be identified with a lower case letter, for example: (Romero, 2006a; Romero, 2006b). When several articles are referenced in the same parenthesis, they should be mentioned following alphabetical or chronological order, separated by semicolons, for example: (Uribe, 2000; Polo et al., 2001). In case that several authors have the same last name and date, the initial of the first name should be written, for example: (Pedraza F., 2005; Pedraza M., 2006).
When citing a citation, the consulted work should be identified with the Latin word apud in italics, which means referenced by, for example: (Silva apud Pedraza, 2001). The textual transcription of a part of the work should be presented in quotation marks.
References. This subtitle must be aligned to the left and in bold. The bibliographical references should be written on a separated page at the end of the article and it should be ordered alphabetically, beginning with the last name(s) of the author(s). It should be single spaced, justified and with a tab up to the third letter beginning from the second line of the reference. In order to add format and style, follow these instructions: in the FORMAT menu, select the PARAGRAPH option…SPECIAL TAB, FRENCH option… 0.6 cm.
In works with two or three authors, their names should be separated by semicolons and in those with more than three authors, only the name of the first three authors is written and et al. is added. The initials of the names of the authors must be followed by a period and without spaces between them. The term et al. should not be in italics nor preceded by a comma.
Typographical resources used to highlight the title will be bold and cursive letter for scientific names.
The references of accepted articles, but that haven’t been published yet, must be designated as “in press” and the authors must verify that such articles have been accepted for publication.
The citation of a “personal communication” must be avoided unless it gives essential information not available in a public source. In such case, a footnote with the last name of the author, followed by the expression “personal communication”, the date of the communication, the name, city, department or state and the country of the institution to which it belongs must be included.
Veterinary and Animal Science Journal, recommends consistency in the case of scripts between double last names and between last names and initials, since the article citations published in this journal will appear in international databases that handle names in agreement with the norms of the English-speakers. If there isn’t any consistency, the author will have more than one name (for example: Luis Fernando Uribe Velasquez will appear under V, as Velasquez, L.F.U., but under U as Uribe-Velasquez, L.F., if the hyphen is used). In the case of last names with a preposition (von, van, di, de, de la, etc.), these should be mentioned before the last name, for example: Van Rensburg, S.N. ; Da Silva, M.A.; DE la Torre, S.F.
